What We Do

Consulting. Training. Speaking.

We use the practice of biomimicry to help innovators find inspired design solutions. We train professionals to be the next generation of biomimics. And we share the amazing ways that nature’s wisdom solves human problems with people around the world.

Thanks to our cumulative decades worth of scholarship, research, writing, consulting, and teaching, we have a unique relationship with nature’s genius.

How do we use that knowledge to connect the world with biomimicry?

HOW DOES NATURE CONTAIN AND DISPENSE LIQUIDS?

Iconic green brand 7th Generation needed ideas for new packaging designs that would contain and disperse products more effectively. Biomimicry 3.8 provided 50 unique biological examples and concept applications. 7th Generation’s designers incorporated the novel ideas into ongoing product development and design work.

FRESH IDEAS IN OIL AND GAS

Oil and gas company Shell invited Biomimicry 3.8 to lead a three-day ideation workshop to spark new approaches to carbon sequestration, no-impact drilling, and filtering oil from water. Over time, Shell advanced nine of the 17 project ideas from the workshop, such as off-the-shelf biomimetic products and design concepts for specific engineers to develop.

HOW DOES NATURE BUILD?

Mangroves achieve structural support using extensive prop roots, and adapt to inundation with multiple strategies to oxygenate roots. Architects enrolled in our Certified Biomimicry Professional program were inspired to explore how the solid structure of mangroves, often surrounded by water, could help shape the development of more resilient buildings.

MATERIAL DESIGN LESSONS FROM A LIZARD

A chameleon’s tongue is not only able to deploy rapidly, but can also expand in both width and length as it moves. Students at our Discover Nature’s Genius workshop in Africa brainstormed how these integrated functions could inspire the design of a super material that absorbs and stores energy as it changes shape.
